The boy’s mother offers red kumkum powder. Ruchi’s mother rejects the proposal, saying her daughter cannot marry before she completes her postgraduation course. Ruchi has worn an old black saree. She is shocked when the lady enters the house but is happy when her mother rejects the proposal. Her heart gives out a million thanks to her mom. Ruchi’s dad asks her, “Are you in love with someone? I hope he belongs to our community. I have your brother and sister to get married.” Ruchi replies, “No dad, I am not interested in anyone.” Ruchi has been with her dad to put an ad in the newspaper for a suitable alliance for her. The boy who works as a manager for a company comes to her house. He informs Ruchi’s parents that he is an orphan. Ruchi’s parents reject the proposal. A family lives near Bhimpoli station. The boy having a beard is running a typing class. The boy’s parents say that they don’t believe in astrology. They will place a flower on the deity, and if the flower falls, marriage shall be conducted. Ruchi’s parents do not like it. They reject the proposal.
Her dad continues to correspond to matrimonial alliances from the National News. The prospect of marriage is dim. In the midst of this, Manickam comes and examines Ruchi’s horoscope. She is going through Saturn mahadasha for nineteen years. The first half has been very effective. Therefore her marriage will take place after the first half which ends on January 7, 1984. Graha puja will have to be performed. Manickam commences the puja on September 9, 1983. A day before Ganesh Chaturthi festival, Ruchi is asked to light a lamp in the morning and evening, apply holy ash, go around the peepal tree in the evening and throw a packet without looking back, which Ruchi does. After that Manickam infers that someone has put an ominous spell on her. He is a dhobi or a washerman. The karma has taken place in April 1982. Four women are responsible for it : a widow, Ruchi’s maternal aunt and two kshatriya women.
Ruchi has contracted negative vibrations that are anti-God. All types of abusive words and wicked and destructive feelings enter her mind. Her thoughts become uncontrollable. She loses hold on her spiritual self. She cannot light a lamp for God. The evil in her disturbs her vehemently. She visits Lord Shiva’s temple and prostrates with her full body on the floor asking the lord to save her. To dispel the evil, Manickam works for ninety days. It is mayanam. He asks her to light lamp at eleven in the evening and remain awake till twelve midnight on new moon days, three days in three months. Manickam gives her two talismans, one for Saturn, which she will throw away after the ninth day of her marriage and another to wear around her neck.
Her dad speaks of an alliance for Ruchi. The boy’s parents are ready to perform marriage immediately during Diwali. Her dad goes to Chera and inquires about the boy. He gets to know that the boy is a drunkard. Days pass by. Ruchi gets another proposal for marriage. The boy is from Chirgaon. His parents come with him. He runs a computer class. His parents accept Ruchi. The boy has a slight hump on the back. Ruchi’s father consults his colleagues. They say,” The couple will not look nice when they walk together.” So the proposal is rejected. There is an instance where the boy’s father rejects Ruchi because her horoscope indicates she is prone to learning. The man says, “We don’t want such a girl.”
